Educational Assistant

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Interested in a career as an Educational Assistant? Mohawk College offers a Diploma program with a provincially-approved curriculum for the training of Educational Assistants. This intensive program has been designed to develop the aptitudes, knowledge and skills you need to work with, and support children and youth during their educational experience. A skillful combination of classroom components and school-based field placements prepare program graduates to work as non-teaching team members with teachers and other professionals in meeting student needs. Courses in this program are offered mainly through Distance Education.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Applicants to the program must meet the following MINIMUM requirements:

  1. Excellent interpersonal skills.
  2. Copy of a Grade 12 transcript showing completion at the general or advanced levels or satisfactory completion of the mature student tests. All applicants submitting prior academic history completed outside of Canada must provide confirmation of equivalence to an Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
  3. Current Elementary and/or secondary school classroom experience (volunteer or paid), in the year of application submission.
  4. Two letters of reference from that school site on school letterhead supporting the applicant, confirming the hours and the duties completed.
  5. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  6. Basic computer skills (e.g. word processing, data management, Internet) or completion of an introductory computer course (INFOBW001: Workshop for Windows), before taking Computers in Education.

PROGRAM OF STUDIES

Courses are restricted to those who have previously applied and been accepted. Please follow the program of study and ensure that the required prerequisites are completed before proceeding to the next course. Please refer to dayschool program of study for more information.

NOTES
Written Police Clearance and completion of Communicable Disease Screening is required before you begin a field placement.
