NOTE: The GED certificate is obtained by passing the GED exam set by the Ministry of Education and administered through the ILC. For more information on how to register and write your GED test, please go to www.ilc.org or call 1-800-573-7022.


Academic Preparation Programs

These tuition-free programs provide participants with the opportunity to upgrade their academic skills to reach their personal goals of employment or further education or training.

The academic upgrading streams offer adult learners:

  • A personal academic assessment
  • An individualized “Learning Plan”
  • Self-paced and goal-oriented learning
  • A learner centred teaching approach
  • Flexible hours and continuous intake

    This TUITION-FREE academic preparation program will benefit you if you:

    • Do not have the admission requirements (i.e. math and/or English) for the college program to which you want to apply
    • Want to register as an apprentice but did not finish high school - or completed high school some time ago and need to review
    • Need to upgrade your English and math skills before using GED (www.ilc.org) preparatory materials
    • Need a "Grade 12 Equivalency" to be considered for employment advancement or promotion

    Entrance Requirements

    • Mature student status
    • A Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada

    Note: The College & Career Preparation Program does not provide English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction. If English is your second language, Mohawk College invites you to find out your current level by taking the Canadian Language Benchmark Placement Test (CLBPT). Please sign up for the CLBPT in Room J135 (inside the Math Learning Centre) or by calling 905-575-1212 ext. 3957 or ext. 3569.

    The College and Career Preparation Program offers both day and evening classes. Classes run from September to June and start dates are available every month.

    This is a tuition-free program. Financial assistance for day care and/or travel expenses is available to eligible participants.

    We'll book an orientation and assessment to help us determine your present level in reading, writing and mathematics. Based on your goals, we'll develop a training plan outlining what you need to do and how long it will take.
