Pawelczyk Named OCAA Men’s Volleyball Player of the Year

The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association announced the Men's and Women's Volleyball League awards, Thursday (Feb. 26) at the OCAA Final Four Championship Banquet, presented by Belair Direct Insurance in Oshawa, Ontario.

Fourth year, rightside hitter, Steve Pawelczyk of the Mohawk Mountaineers was named the Men's OCAA Player of the Year. He was also named an All-Canadian. In his previous three seasons at the middle position for the Mountaineers, Pawelczyk, the Advertising and Police Foundations student and a graduate of Barton High School, had been overshadowed by the talent on those Mohawk teams, including former All-Canadians Peter Sniuolis and Jasmin Cull. The middle/right side player will lead his team into the semi finals against Algonquin College Friday at 5:30 pm.

It marks the second year in a row that Mohawk has received such recognition. Jasmin Cull was so honoured last year.

When third year rightside player Kevin Watson graduated, Steve was approached and accepted the challenge of moving positions for the 2008-2009 season and seamlessly stepped into the position. Pawelczyk led the league in scoring and currently sits second all-time in career aces.

Pawelczyk was also named to the Men's First All-Star Team.

Second Team All-Stars from Mohawk included setter Zac Shulz, the product of St. Catharines Eden and Sean Lowe, the Libero out of Hamilton Westdale.

Mohawk was also represented on the Women's All-Star Teams. Rightside player Leah Waxman from Port Dover made the First Team along with Libero Elizabeth Johnston from Henry Street High School in Whitby.

Named to the Second Team was Rachel VanHartingsveldt, the leftside hitter from Durham Christian.

Landis Doyle of the Humber Hawks was named the top women's player in the OCAA and All Canadian.
