Workplace Harassment
Mohawk College is committed to build and preserve a positive working environment for all its employees and will ensure, as much as reasonably practical, that employees are not subjected to harassment in the workplace. The College will treat all complaints of harassment seriously and will strive to ensure they are resolved quickly, confidentially, and fairly.
"Workplace harassment" means engaging in a course of vexatious comment or conduct against a worker in a workplace that is known or ought reasonably to be known to be unwelcome and includes:
- making remarks, jokes or innuendos that demean, ridicule, intimidate, or offend
- displaying or circulating offensive pictures or materials in print or electronic form
- bullying
- making repeated offensive or intimidating phone calls or e-mails
- engaging in inappropriate sexual touching, advances, suggestions or requests
- spreading malicious rumours
- belittling an employee
Harassment does not include reasonable action or conduct by an employer, manager or supervisor that is part of the normal job function even if there are unpleasant consequences for the employee.
Reporting and Investigating Harassment
All employees have a responsibility to report harassment if they or someone else is being harassed. There are three levels for reporting harassment. Refer to HR402 "Harassment"
Speak up
Tell the offending person if you are comfortable doing so.
Informal
Seek advice from your supervisor or Human Resources if you are not comfortable speaking up or if the behaviour does not stop.
Formal
A formal complaint may be necessary if the informal complaint process does not work or fpr serious harassment complaints.
