Reporting Acts of Violence

All individuals are encouraged to raise any concerns about workplace violence and to report any violent incidents or threats to Security.

Mohawk College will investigate and deal with all incidents and complaints of workplace violence in a fair and timely manner, respecting the privacy of all concerned, within legislative parameters.

Refer to procedure ERP810 "Reporting and Responding to Violence" for reporting details.

If you are involved in or witness an act of violence

Person with History of Violent Behaviour

Employees must inform their supervisor or Security if there is potential for encountering a person known to him/her as an individual with a history of violence and if the risk of violence is likely to expose the employee to physical injury at work.

The college will take appropriate measures to protect employees in such situations, including informing the affected department and disclosing as much information (including personal information) as necessary to protect employees from physical injury.

Threatening Behaviour

Employees who become aware of a person exhibiting behaviour that may lead to violence must immediately contact their supervisor.

Examples of such behaviour include inappropriate discussions or communication via e-mail, websites or in essays, fascination with death or weapons or anti-social behaviour.

Negative Personality Characteristics
      Suspicious of others
      Believes he or she is entitled to something
      Cannot take criticism
      Feels victimized
      Shows a lack of concern for the safety and well being of others
      Has low self esteem
      Blames others or his or her problems or mistakes
      Displays outbursts of extreme anger towards others
      Extreme arrogance and disregard for people's feelings

Marked Changes in Mood or Behaviour
      Extreme or bizarre behaviour
      Decline in work performance

Socially Isolated
      History of negative interpersonal relationships
      Few friends or family
      Sees the workplace as a "family"
      Has on obsessive involvement with his or her job

The college will investigate and evaluate these threats take appropriate measures to the protect employees in such situations, including informing the affected department and disclosing as much information (including personal information) as necessary to protect employees from physical injury.
