|
What do you suggest I do to be successful in my courses?

- Do all assignments YOURSELF! Even if you are working with someone else, be sure to understand every aspect of the assignment.
- Be sure to do ALL assignments and hand them in on time.
- Take good notes and review them daily.
- Ask your professor for clarification whenever you are unsure.
- Remember - you always have homework.
- Review Learning Strategies for College Success information.
- Keep a day timer where you record all your assignment and test due dates. Carry this with you at all times.
- Become "part of the team". Get to know your classmates and participate in class discussions. Share phone numbers with a few of your classmates. Join up into study groups before the exams to review the material.
- Ask for a peer tutor early in the semester through the Counselling Department.
- Make use of any Open Access and Computer Learning Centre tutored help.
- Be proud of your work!
What do I do if I miss a lab or lecture?
- Contact a classmate to get the material you missed and anything that may have been assigned to do or read.
- Have a "buddy" with whom you agree to cover each other in case of missed classes. Be sure to have your buddy's phone number; we cannot give them out.
- Be sure you know the rules for each course about what will happen if you miss a lab or are late with an assignment. Professors require a medical note in order to make exceptions.
What happens if I drop or miss a course?
- During the first ten days of a semester, a student may officially withdraw, without academic penalty, from any course. Up to approximately the eighth week of the semester, a student may drop a course and have a "W" placed on their transcript. After that date, all courses will be assigned a final grade.
- A grade of F will remain on your transcript permanently. If you repeat a course and pass it, the course will appear twice on your transcript: once with a grade of F and once with the passing grade.
- Many courses are prerequisites to courses in future semesters, so if you have not completed the current course successfully you will not be able to take that next course in the future semester.
- Not all courses are offered every semester at night school. Be sure to plan carefully.
What happens if I decide to stop attending a course after the final drop date?
- You will receive a grade of "F" in the course and be subject to the same prerequisite issues indicated in "What happens if I drop or miss a course?".
What happens if I am sick for an exam?
- Carefully review the exam policy for information.
- Once you write an exam, your mark is final.
- If you miss an exam without proper notification and documentation, you will receive a zero grade for the exam.
- Be sure to contact the department, perferably your professor, as soon as possible.
When I go to my lab, all the computers are taken. What should I do?
- Pair up in the lab. Don’t be shy and don't give up.
- Ask to join someone and then do the work later yourself in open access or at home. Watching once and then doing it yourself will reinforce the material.
- Take advantage of the lab time your class has been assigned to do any homework and labs you are assigned.
- Use the Peer Tutored Open Access. First year students get priority and peer tutors are there. Ask them for help if you need some.
What can I do if I'm having trouble in a course?
- Talk to your professor.
- Sign up for a peer tutor as soon as you can in the Library on the 2nd floor. Don’t leave it to the last minute!! Other than a registration fee, there is no charge for peer tutoring.
- Ask classmates for help. The help they give you reinforces the material for them, so it helps both of you!
What happens if I decide to stop attending a course after the final drop date?
