Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How do I apply for the program?

Applicants apply through the Ontario College Application Service (OCAS) and can access the online application process found at www.OntarioColleges.ca. Students are encouraged to apply early (prior to mid-January) to avoid our waitlist.

When does the program start and end?

The program has a September start and ends near the end of April each year. There is no “fast track” or entry at other points in the year.

Is there a program orientation?

At the start of the program in September there is a program orientation. Applicants have a chance to meet faculty and ask questions that are specific to their needs.

What kind of credential is it that I will have at the end of the program?

Upon successful completion of this program, you will have an Ontario College Graduate Certificate from Mohawk College with advanced study focusing on concurrent disorders. You will not be a “Certified Addictions Counselor” or “Certified Concurrent Disorders Counselor”.  You may qualify for one of these depending on your previous education and experience, once you have worked in the field for a few years. Contact certification organizations for more information. It is not mandatory at this point, to be certified to work in this field.

Your study in Concurrent Disorders will enhance your employability in this field.

Can I work while I am in the program?

Classes are scheduled from Wednesday to Friday, leaving you time to continue working on days not scheduled for instruction. Classes can start as early as 8am and end as late as 6pm; there may be participation requirements in some courses. There may be gaps in your schedule during an instruction day, but they are not likely amenable to working outside the College.

NOTE: Time worked for pay at an agency is not eligible for credit for field placement. You may apply for Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition to try to obtain credit towards courses, including Field Placement. For further information on the PLAR process visit PLAR website.

Can I find my own field placement?

There is a matching process administered by the field placement coordinator to appropriately match students to available agencies. These placements are developed between the College and the agencies. We ask that if you have a preference or an idea for a possible placement, that you connect with the field placement coordinator during the placement process and NOT the prospective agency.
