Prior Learning Assessment & Recognition (PLAR)
To be eligible to receive PLAR for learning received while working in the Child Care Field a student must meet the following criteria:
- Students must discuss their request for PLAR with the Program Co-ordinator in the first semester.
- Student's work must have been completed within the past 10 years in a licensed Child Care facility/educational setting.
- Students may apply for PLAR for up to 75% (3 separate Field Placements), based on the student's ability to demonstrate the application of theoretical knowledge, attitudes and skills with a variety of age groups. Each student's experience will be evaluated on an individual basis.
- Students will apply for Field Placement PLAR on an individual course basis (EC298, EC299, EC398), and must register through the PLAR office.
- Field Placement 3 will not be eligible for PLAR. This placement must be completed in an environment other than the student's workplace. Students may not be considered as staff.
- All PLAR assessments will be completed through a Portfolio process.
- Students who have been unsuccessful in any previous placements will not be eligible for PLAR.
For each Field Placement PLAR application the following documentation must be presented:
- Written job description.
- Documented supervisory records and 2 letters of reference.
- Documented responsibilities similar to those of the appropriate Field Placement. (Students should use the appropriate field placement competencies as a guide for their portfolio development.)
- Students applying for PLAR for more than 50% of their field placement experience must have documentation of experience with at least 2 different age groups
- Students will be eligible for a maximum of 25% of their PLAR credit based on work experience in a non licensed Child Care setting. (eg. ECE Resource Centres, JK, SK, Private Home Day Care, Toy Lending Libraries, etc.)
