When does the program start?
There is a fall (September) Fennell and Brant Odeon campus and a winter (January) Fennell campus intake of students. Through Continuing Education, there is a September intake for the E.C.E. night school program Fennell campus
How many students are accepted?
Fall intake Fennell campus 150 students (3 class sections), Brant Odeon campus 40 students, and in the winter intake Fennell campus 50 students (1 class section) are accepted into the program.
How long is the program?
This is a four-semester program. Most of the students who start in September attend classes during the fall and winter semesters, take the summer off, and return again in September to complete the program the following spring. The January Intake (Fennell Campus only) does not have the option of taking the summer off. They complete their second semester in the spring/summer, and after a 3-week break (approximately) return in the fall to complete semester three and in the winter complete their final semester.
Are there placements? (i.e. field work, co-ops)
Field Placement is a component of the diploma program that provides practical experience within community-based child care programs, enabling students to demonstrate skills that have been learned or simulated in the college classroom. Four field placement experiences are offered as four course credits in the two years of study.
Field Placements occur in the Hamilton, Burlington, Brantford area, it is your responsibility to arrange for travel and cover any additional cost.
Do I need First Aid Training?
During your first semester you will be
required to complete a Standard First Aid Course Infant CPR Level C with AED training, it is suggested that this course be completed prior to your enrolment. If you are not able to take this course, arrangements will be made in your first semester to complete this course.
Do I require a Police Check?
If you have been convicted of an offence under the criminal code for which you have not been pardoned, you may be denied the opportunity to complete field placement. Please be advised that
once you have been accepted and registered into the Early Childhood Education Program, a certificate of “Police Clearance” and/or “Consent to Disclosure” must be completed. This may involve additional cost to the student.
Do I need to get medical information updated?
Prior to enrolment, you will receive information from the Health Clinic at the college regarding medical requirements.
Please note all medical requirements must be completed prior to your field placement experience in your first semester.
Do I need to have a computer?
As part of your program of studies you will be required to use a computer for communication purposes, Internet information, and web based course delivery. (Access is available at the college if you do not have Internet access at home)
How many students find work?
There is a demand for trained professionals to care for children. E.C.E. graduates continue to have a high rate of success in job placement. While most find employment in licensed childcare settings, others work under contracts, as nannies, as home day care providers, and as school age care providers. An E.C.E. diploma opens may doors. Our grads have also found employment in hospital playrooms, working with special needs children, parent-child drop-in programs, professional resource centres, Boards of Education, and as reps for toy companies.
If I already have some courses from another college or university, can I get exemptions?
Depending on the course, exemptions may be granted. Any students wishing to find out about advanced standings should make an appointment with the Academic Coordinator.
If I have lots of experience with children, do I have to take all of the courses?
Mohawk’s Prior Learning Assessment office could advise you of the process of determining credit.
What if I have E.C.E. training from outside of Ontario?
