The Child and Youth Worker Program is offered through the Continuing Education (CE) Department at Mohawk College.

For additional further information contact our Continuing Education CYW Program Manager,  Marco Felvus .

The Continuing Education CYW Program is a great option for potential students who may be working, parenting, or who may find full time studies difficult due to a variety of other reasons. Only CE students who have been acepted into the CYW Proram may register for courses and therefore online registration is not available.  Please contact Marco, or the CE office for an application form.

Points to Remember:

• As a way of providing increased access and flexibility in learning many of the CE Child and Youth Worker courses are offered through a combination of delivery modes. Courses may include all or some distance classes and blended delivery classes which include on-line classes and in-class learning activities. For some courses there may be the potential of an occasional weekend class. Weekend classes will be outlined in the catalogue offering for the specific course.

• Field placements occur  in the areas of: Hamilton, Toronto, Burlington, Kitchener, Waterloo, Guelph, Cambridge, Simcoe and Brantford . You may be required to do at least one, and possibly two, out-of-town placements and you must be prepared to travel to other communities for placement. The out of town placements may occur during any of your field placements and you should be prepared for this possibility and the possibility of shift work (including some weekends) for your first placement

• Frequently students travel to field placement agencies not on a bus route. It is advisable that you obtain your drivers licence prior to entering the CYW Program.

•The development of self-awareness and emotional maturity along with the ability to understand the degree of one's own involvement with people are of prime importance in the practice of Child and Youth Work.

• Current Police Clearances are required prior to proceeding to placement.

• As part of your program of studies you will be required to utilize a computer, internet, and web based course delivery a minimum of 2 times per week. (Access is available at the college if you do not have internet access at home)

• Within the Child and Youth Worker Program of Studies a General Education Course is required and students are encouraged to take this course whenever it fits their personal schedule.

• The Child and Youth Worker Program offers Credit for Prior Learning, Assessment and Recognition (PLAR). This process allows you to apply for official recognition of skills and knowledge acquired during on-the-job experience as a CYW, formal education and training programs. You can be granted credit through the demonstration of knowledge and skills which match individual course outcomes.

• If you have been previously identified or there has been a suspected disability please contact our Disabilities Services Department once you have been offered admission to our Program.

Registration and Admission

Only CE students who have been accepted into the CYW Program may register for courses and therefore online course registration is not available.

Admission into the CE Child and Youth Worker Program occurs primarily in the Spring Semester for a Fall beginning to the Program.  Occasionally learners begin their course work in alternate semesters. In order to do this an application form must be completed, prior to course registration.

FirstClass (FRED)

The eLearning platform used by the Continuing Education Child and Youth Worker Program is called FirstClass. (FRED) It is an easy-to-use electronic messaging and conferencing system implemented to support academic learning while a student is enrolled in the Child and Youth Worker Program.

As an academic support tool, FirstClass allows students and faculty to communicate on-line with each other and their peers in order to improve academic performance. As such, all activities hosted within FirstClass are designed to assist the student in meeting CYW course outcomes and CYW Program Standards.

Although use of FirstClass is a compulsory component of enrollment in the Child and Youth Worker Program if a student does not have a computer at home, they have access to a computer and the Internet at the College.
