The Educational Assistant Program is a two year diploma program that was developed in response to the ever increasing need by school boards for well trained Educational Assistants. With improved methods of assessment and increased identification of exceptionalities, there are more Educational Assistants hired every year by almost every Board of Education.
Working in partnership with teachers, an Educational Assistant has the luxury of spending the majority of their day in direct one-on-one contact with special students. For further information about applying to the program, please contact Theresa Bain (Admission Advisor).
There are as many different roles for an Educational Assistant as there are students who rely on them. Current philosophy in the field of Education promotes the least intrusive intervention; meaning a child will often receive support from an Educational Assistant to continue in a regular class setting rather than being placed in a special class. Of course, there is still a need for special classes and this is where many Educational Assistants will find their niche. For more information read the Educational Assistant full-time program overview.
As of January 2010, Mohawk College has offered an Educational Assistant "fastrack" program at the Mohawk Laurier Centre (Odeon Campus). It is the same program of study and courses but there is no summer break and students complete the 4 semesters in 16 months beginning every January. Students enjoy the urban campus with a variety of student rental accommodations in the heart of Brantford and the increasing educational presence shared with Nippissing and Laurier University.
The Educational Assistant Diploma program has been offered through Continuing Education both in class and online for a number of years. Many of our online courses are taken through Ontario Learn to fulfill course requirements at other colleges who do not offer the required courses
