Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What does an Educational Assistant do?

An EA usually works with one student or a small group in a classroom to help the students complete their work. An EA will often help manage student behaviour and teach appropriate social skills and develop a positive supportive relationship with the exceptional students as they may work with the same students for number of years.

Where does an Educational Assistant work?

Usually in a school setting, Monday to Friday, 30 hours/week for 40 weeks of the year.

In Ontario there are two main school systems - the Public and Catholic, both are funded by the government and offer the same curriculum. They do handle their special needs population differently - the Catholic Board has full integration whereas the Public Board has specialized classes and schools. Both hire many EA's although their roles may be quite different.

How can you become an Educational Assistant?

The School Boards prefer that Educational Assistans be graduates of the Educational Assistant Program but it is not always required. Often the people who volunteer and have general post secondary education will be hired.

Schools are always glad to get volunteers to help their students and teachers. You will need a Police check and you should have the patience and understanding to make sure the experience is a positive one.
