Family Issues
We all grow up in different families with different issues that shape and affect who we are. Some of us were raised in two parent, one parent, same sexed, adoptive, foster, grandparent led, multiracial or stepfamilies etc. Some of our families were supportive and helpful while others didn't seem to be or were inconsistent. All families will experience a crisis at some point. Some families always seem to be under some stress. These family issues, whether short- term or long-term, may affect your studies while at college even if you are not living with your family at the time.
Some Tips for Dealing with Family Issues
- Think about the strengths and skills you currently have to deal with family issues and trust that these will help you get through a difficult time
- Talk with someone you can trust about your family worries to get support or information
- Take care of yourself first so that you can cope effectively with what is happening
- Remember that you are not responsible for fixing all that is wrong in your family
- Try to keep the lines of communication clear and open during times of family turmoil. Speak in a respectful way with the person with whom you have the problem. Try not to get in the middle of family conflicts or become the messenger for other members of your family
- Rmember that you cannot avoid your family's influence in terms of how you now live your life; speaking with a mental health counsellor can help you understand these patterns and influences and new options.
