Making and Keeping Friends at College
College can be a great opportunity to meet many new people from different backgrounds. These people can support you while you are getting through your program, become life long friends or work contacts down the road. Sometimes making and keeping friends however can be scary or challenging but there are many things you can do to get this started.
- Think about what kind of friends you want to make. What kinds of interests and qualities are attractive to you and what type of people do you want in your life? Remember that not everyone you meet will be a positive influence in your life
- If you are shy or nervous about making friends, think about what you have to offer as a friend. Are you funny, honest, outgoing, helpful, willing to try new things? Find ways to show these qualities to others
- Introduce yourself to others. Remember everyone is in the same boat; everyone wants to meet people
- Attend orientation activities, parties, sports events or any social activities offered at your campus or in residence
- Be open to learning about new perspectives, cultures, ideas or values
- Invite a potential friend(s) for a coffee
- Join or start a study group
- Join on campus clubs or sports teams
- Get a job on or off campus
- Talk to other students; talking about your coursework is an easy way to start
- If you live in residence leave your door open so that people can drop by or say "hi." Join residence activities or associations
- Consider doing your homework in more public places if you can handle some distractions
- Ask people questions as a way to learn about them and show your interest
- Consider using online options to meet people such as chat rooms, social networking sites etc.
- Watch your body language; smile, keep eye contact, and look receptive to meeting others
- Remember that making friends takes time
