21st Century Classroom

active learningExplore what these new teaching and learning spaces offer

What is active learning?
Active learning is involving students directly and actively in the learning process itself. Instead of passively receiving information verbally and visually, students are receiving and participating and doing. Active learning engages students in doing something other than listening to a lecture and note-taking to help them learn and apply course content. Students could be involved in collaborating with one another, or writing, reading and reflecting individually.

Active Learning at Mohawk
Although you can facilitate active learning in any classroom, Mohawk College has invested in cool, new spaces for collaboration and active learning. These Active Learning Classrooms or ALCs are found in The Learning Exchange (opened in Winter 2011). Drop on by The Learning Exchange (H wing) to see active learning in action!

Active learning resources
This sound framework for theory and practice took hold 30 years ago and continues to evolve, assisted with advancements in educational technology. Below are some starting points, but feel free to investigate further.
• You may want to first gauge your own teaching perspective to see how you might align with active learning principles. Pratt and Collins’ TPI is helpful.
• Zmuda, A. (2008). Springing into active learning. Educational Leadership, 66(3), 38-42. Retrieved from ERIC database.
• Bonwell, C.C., & EIson, J.A. (n.d.). Active learning: Creating excitement in the classroom. Retrieved November 22, 2010 from http://www.ntlf.com/html/lib/bib/91-9dig.htm
