What is it?
Programs and software can add interest to your course materials whether you are just starting to play with graphics or advancing to homemade videos. CTL recommends:
- Image editor (capture, manipulate, and/or re-touch images and photos): GIMP (open source);
- Basic screen capture (take snapshots of your computer’s screen): ScreenHunter;
- Advanced screen capture (create videos of your powerpoint/computer screen as well as add audio and other media:
- Camtasia Studio
- Wink (open source option)
- Jing (free - a "light" version of Camtasia)
Why would you use it?
These tools and their audio-visuals:
• are key to comprehension for different types of learners;
• model multimedia skills for students;
• reinforce step-by-step instructions for linear tasks e.g. submitting assignments electronically.

GIMP, ScreenHunter, Jing and Wink can be downloaded straight to your workstation free of charge. Their sites contain tutorials and tips. You can also drop by CTL and use the products on the faculty workstations where help is on hand.
