MARC: Mohawk Applied Research Centre

MARC plays a vital role in the college and the community. We foster a culture of collaboration, learning, and innovation - essential skills for identifying and solving relevant problems.

Future Ready Students

Students work on real world projects, where they develop real skills based on real experience with private sector partners. Mohawk students graduate ready to thrive in the workplace - to solve the problems of today and to collaborate, learn and innovate - to solve the problems of the future.

Future Ready Communities

MARC is essential to businesses looking for a partner to facilitate research and development for forward-looking projects. Our experienced faculty and staff lead the effort to develop and test cutting-edge technology, and they manage costs and resources to ensure projects progress efficiently. Our business partners grow and our communities are enriched by our trained graduates.

MARC is Future Ready in three interdisciplinary and integrated areas: Applied Research, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation.

Applied Research: Our Applied Research program focuses on solving real world problems. We build and test tools for a range of projects concentrated in the areas of Health and Technology.

MARC is a leader in the application of information technology to health care. We are currently developing eHealth infrastructure and integration solutions. Through our partnership with Canada Health Infoway, we are building prototype software for a pan-Canadian Electronic Health Record System (EHRS). Prototype development is a crucial phase in the IT plan to connect provincial health systems and accelerate the use of integrated electronic health records across multiple platforms. Our work is reflective of top-tier software engineering, and the techniques we have developed are readily transferrable to other parts of Canada and the world.

Entrepreneurship: Our entrepreneurship program prepares students to succeed in a changing global economy. We provide students from a wide range of disciplines with the opportunity to implement their vision and gain real world experience by working with external partners and by drawing on MARC's resources.

Innovation: We are always exploring new ideas, applications and approaches to meet the future needs of our partners and communities. Service Innovations are a focus as we develop new customer interfaces and new applications of technology in the service sector.

Applied Research in Mobile Technologies has begun using the iPhone platform: Mohawk College's first robust application was developed by students for students in the Innovation Lab. The application has a news feed, searchable campus map and chat with a librarian feature. MARC is now offering a one-week corporate training course on developing iPhone applications, and plans are underway to expand Mobile Technologies to include RIM's hand held devices.

MARC is also exploring innovative ways to integrate health care and technology. We are currently looking at health care applications for a large multi-touch computer interface technology.

Partners and Sponsors

Partners and sponsors are private or public sector corporations or individuals, who have provided in-kind donations or funding for research projects at MARC. We collaborate with Small-Medium Enterprises (SME) in Southern Ontario to encourage innovation and improve their productivity and competitiveness.

Funding

Our Applied Research projects are funded through a combination of research grants, sponsorships and private sector partners. We have received funding from FedDev Ontario's Applied Research and Commercialization Initiative for our collaborative research projects with Small-Medium Enterprises (SME) and from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) College and Community Innovation Program for our Electronic Health Records (EHR) project.
