Program Description
Advanced Police Studies Graduate Certificate
The Advanced Police Studies Certificate program is an Ontario College Graduate Certificate offered at Brantford Campus in Brantford. Mohawk College is the only Canadian College that employs the judgemental training system. Students in the Advanced Police Studies Graduate Certificate program will therefore have the chance to:
- Build an advanced set of knowledge and skills for a career in policing. Study topics such as intelligence lead policing, crime scene management, suspect detection and apprehension, victim services and current domestic security issues
- Discover a unique program format including both College professors and Police trainers, learning through case studies and practical scenarios, electronic forums, simulations and mentoring
- Apply skills to Police Car Scenario Lab and Mohawk College Mock Trial Court Room
- Examine Canadian political, justice and legal systems including the wide variety of criminal and civil justice agencies and services
- Research, organize, evaluate, synthesize and analyze evidence and statistical data based on investigation
- Apply ethical, accountable and effective professional practices to individuals and groups from a variety of diverse backgrounds
- Practice risk management principles to minimize civil liabilities by knowing the current legal responsibilities of law enforcement including arrest and use of force; fitness and emergency management skills
- Develop effective problem-solving skills with respect to critical incident management in law enforcement, particularly in evidence gathering and arrest in practical scenarios. These scenarios are interactive and will use a judgemental training simulator
- Enhance computer, communication, team-building and relationship skills
Advanced Police Studies students will learn advanced use of force theory and current police use of force training and will train with Judgemental Training Video Systems and Police Tactical Structures.
