PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
This program is designed to build on the knowledge, skills, and attitude of professionals in the health and/or social service field in order to increase competency and skill in caring for those with dementia. You will learn how to:
- provide care, recognizing the uniqueness for each individual and the importance of preserving the personhood of the individual with dementia
- utilize caregiving strategies which promote the strengths and abilities of the individual and promote positive outcome for both individuals with dementia and care provider
- collaboratively work within a multidisciplinary team to holistically assess the care needs of individuals with dementia as well as family members and significant others
- recognize the ethical and legal implications affecting individuals with dementia and provide an environment which empowers individuals and families as they prepare to make difficult choices
- stimulate positive changes in the workplace environment in order to meet the changing needs of the individual with dementia
- maintain competency as a care provider by seeking out learning opportunities on an ongoing basis
- evaluate caregiving practices by utilizing current research in order to promote quality of life for individuals with dementia
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Dementia Studies: Diploma or Degree in Health Studies. Permission from the program Manager and medical clearance are required in order to register for the field placements.
Working with Dementia Clients: Certificate in Health Studies or Human Services. Permission from the program Manager and medical clearance are required in order to register for the field placements.
