Educational Assistant Diploma

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Interested in a career as an Educational Assistant? Mohawk College offers a Diploma program with a provincially-approved curriculum for the training of Educational Assistants. This intensive program has been designed to develop the aptitudes, knowledge and skills you need to work with, and support children and youth during their educational experience. A skillful combination of classroom components and school-based field placements prepare program graduates to work as non-teaching team members with teachers and other professionals in meeting student needs. Courses in this program are offered mainly through Distance Education.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Applicants to the program must meet the following MINIMUM requirements:

  1. Submit an Official (sealed) Grade 12 transcript showing OSSD or equivalent (GED, College and Career Preparation) including:
    •  Grade 12 English, C or U or equivalent - recommended minimum grade of 70%
    •  Grade 10 Mathematics, D or P - recommended minimum grade of 70%
    All applicants submitting prior academic history completed outside of Canada must provide confirmation of equivalence to an Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
  2. Current Elementary and/or secondary school classroom experience (volunteer or paid), in the year of application submission.
  3. Two letters of recommendation on school letterhead from a principal or teacher recommending the student to the Educational Assistant program, based on the volunteer or co-op experience.
  4. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  5. Basic computer skills (e.g. word processing, data management, Internet) or completion of an introductory computer course (INFOBW001: Workshop for Windows), before taking Computers in Education.

PROGRAM OF STUDIES (Courses Required)

Core courses are restricted to those who have applied and been accepted. Students are responsible for following the program of study and ensuring that the required prerequisites are completed before proceeding to the next course.

Students may begin taking open courses (i.e. Communications, 2 Electives, Introductory Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Math, Active Citizenship) prior to admission to the EA Program.  Continuing Education students are not required to take COMM10092 or the assessment test. COMMLL041 is required.

EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANT APPRENTICES

A program exists that facilitates individuals who are working as Educational Assistants (EA’s) and who have met all of the requirements for the Educational Assistant Apprenticeship Certificate of Completion, to complete the courses required to be awarded an Educational Assistant Ontario College Diploma.

Registrations for core courses in this program cannot be done online.  You must register in person, by mail, or by fax.  Click here for more information.

A valid student number is required for an exemption.  It is recommended that students have successfully completed at least one EA core course prior to applying for an exemption.  Note that exemptions are granted by the individual academic area.  Click here to read more about the exemption process.

Written Police Clearance is required, by the school principal, before you begin a field placement.
