PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Hamilton District Labour Council, the Brantford District Labour Council and Mohawk College are offering a Certificate program in Labour Studies.
PROGRAM OF STUDIES
Effective Fall 2011 the Program of Studies has changed. Students entering the program will be required to complete the courses listed below to obtain the Certificate. Students who began their studies prior to Fall 2011 should contact the HDLC regarding a strategy for completion.
NOTES
Most courses require a manual. Manuals are sold by the HDLC and fees will be collected from students on the first day of class. Manual prices are available at www.hamiltonlabour.ca. Choose the Education tab.
COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
LABR10047 Labour Law
Explore: certification and dispute settlement, unfair labour practices, good faith bargaining, strikes, lockouts, picketing, the duty of fair representation, management and union rights and grievance arbitration law.

LABR10082 Changing Face of the Labour Movement
Examine Changes in the workplace and community including: aboriginal issues, migrant issues, and globalization. Explore the challenges and opportunities facing the labour movement.

LABRUN002 Stewards Training 1
Examine the responsibilities of the Union Steward, including handling grievances, understanding the collective agreement and the steward/member relationship.

Focus on the grievance procedure, the writing and investigation of grievances and preparation for arbitration.

Learn to assist co-workers with issues such as alcohol and drugs, family tension and stress, through referral to social and community services.
