FAQs

How long does it take to complete the certificate program?
This program is delivered on a part-time basis. Courses generally are held one night a week over a 15 week period during one or more of three semesters - fall, winter, and spring. The Volunteer Management courses are 60 hours each.  Therefore, additional Saturday sessions are identified in the catalogue each semester. Course selections each semester are based on interest and demand and occasionally scheduled courses are cancelled due to low enrollment.   The college attempts to provide offerings every semester, however, students may have to miss a semester to wait for the course they require.

Who are the instructors of the courses?
All instructors are local practitioners. Many are members of provincial and national organizations in their area of speciality.  Instructors are hired based on their expertise for the subject matter and their knowledge of community and corporate resources.  When content requires an expert, we will bring in experts as guest speakers.

I haven't been in school for many years. What are the expectations and workload?
All courses have evaluative components including written assignments, practical work, group and individual presentations, quizzes and tests.

What is the expectation around computer proficiency?
All assignments must be typed. Having a basic knowledge of word processing will be helpful to complete assignments. Computer usage is discussed in various courses within the program of study. Computer and Internet access is available to CE students in the MCACES lounge and Open Access.

What is the expectation for Internet use and e-mail?
It would be extremely beneficial to have access to email as the instructors often communicate course information and resources between classes to students. Students also communicate course information, resources and for group projects between classes. Many resources are web-based. Websites are provided in many classes and the student is expected to visit the site independently to seek out relevant information. MoCoMotion is an online life organizer for many students, staff and faculty at Mohawk College.  Anyone who is an employee or student of Mohawk can access the system from any computer that has a browser and Internet connection.  For more detail visit http://mocomo.mohawkcollege.ca.

What kind of resources are available to assist me in my studies?
As mentioned above, many of the content areas addressed in the courses have excellent website references. The Mohawk College Learning Resource Centre also has an excellent collection of materials covering a variety of topics. The Library staff are happy to assist students searching both print-based and electronic material.  Visit http://brain.mohawkcollege.ca for complete information on library services.

Who are the students in the program?
We have a variety of experiences among the students in the program. Course evaluations are always positive about the fact that the students have learned from each other.  Many students are mature adults who are either working full- or part-time or not currently working. Most are looking to this certificate program to be retrained for new career opportunities.

What can I expect as a adult learner in this program?
The delivery of the courses focuses on Adult Centered Learning.  Adult Centered Learning adheres to the principles of Adult Education in which student and instructor are partners on the learning journey.  It is a process that is both collaborative and participatory. Group exercises, problem-solving, presentations and discussions, in addition to the traditional lecture format, allow the students to understand the concepts while bringing their own perspectives based on life and work experiences.

What is the cost of the certificate program?
Individual course costs are outlined in our current Continuing Education catalogue.  You pay for each course in the semester you register.

Is this program offered through a distance education format?
No, not at this time.
