Welder Operator Certificate

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
If you are looking to obtain welding tickets and a Mohawk College Certificate, the program you should enroll in is the Welder Operator Program. This program starts you off as a beginner and takes you through until you have 7 Canadian welding Bureau (CWB) welding tickets. (depending on how well you pick up the skills taught) The program also teaches you welding theory so that at the end of the program, you will receive the Mohawk College Welder Operator Certificate.
The program is 5 semesters long and includes SMAW (stick), Gas Metal Arc Welding (MIG), Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW), Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (TIG) and Blueprint Reading.
At the end of each semester, the CWB inspector comes in and you will be able to do the welding test for that semester. If you pass the welding test you will get your welding ticket.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Applicants require good mechanical aptitude. Participants with previous welding experience will be assessed during the first course, Shielded Metal Arc Welding I, to determine which level of the program is appropriate. All individuals interested in the program must register in Shielded Metal Arc Welding 1.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
One of the great advantages of a career in welding is the wide variety of jobs available to a skilled welder. Welding is in demand all across the country in many industries; it is truly a “portable” skill. If you prefer to work indoors there is manufacturing, fabrication and maintenance or repair welding.
With a welding background you might also find careers in welding supply sales or the servicing or installation of welding equipment. If you find the technical side of welding interesting you might consider a job in welding inspection or planning welding procedures. You can even go further into welding technology by getting a welding engineering diploma from one of several college sin Ontario (Conestoga & Northern College) which could lead to exciting jobs in the automotive or aerospace industries as well as in the planning and design of large scale welding projects or in welding automation.
There are also many management opportunities in welding that arise when you have acquired skill and experience. These could include welding and fabrication shop supervision, construction project management and quality control in the manufacturing industry. Whatever route you choose in your welding career you will find lots of opportunities and challenges. You can get stared in entry level jobs by obtaining a few basic welding tickets and progress as far and wide as you wish with further welding education at Mohawk College or other colleges across the country.

To receive the Certificate, you must complete the following 5 courses and apply in writing to the Continuing Education Engineering Technology office.
To receive a credit in each course, you must successfully complete both the theory and practical components. Much of the theory is covered at home in self-study units. On completion of the program, you should be able to take an all-position test in Shielded Metal Arc Welding.
