New WSIB Form Process

Please be advised that the Mohawk College revised the process for students on unpaid field placements. For the McKeil School of Business, that includes students from the following programs:

  • Advertising & Marketing Communications Management (formerly Advertising)
  • Business Analysis
  • Human Resources Management
  • Office Administration - Executive
  • Office Administration - Legal
  • Office Administration - Health Services (Formerly Office Administration - Medical)
  • Public Relations
  • Tourism (Formerly Tourism & Travel)

As per Ministry policy, the Ministry will cover all eligible students from the above programs by either WSIB or Private Insurance (based upon which method the placement employer covers their regular employees) while on their approved unpaid field placement. Employers are not required to complete and sign the Ministry's new 'Postsecondary Student Unpaid Work Placement Workplace Insurance Claim' form unless an on-the-job injury or disease has occurred. If an injury/disease does occur, then all WSIB procedures must be followed.

Please note: students who choose to do an out-of-province or out-of-country unpaid placement are not covered by WSIB. There may be a possibility of limited coverage by private insurance; please contact your coordinator for more details before confirming your placement.

Students who accept a paid placement are considered employees of their Placement employer and are not covered by the Ministry, but should be covered by their employer's WSIB or Private Insurance plan.
