I am interested in the Breastfeeding Program. What is it about?
The Breastfeeding Program is offered through Continuing Education, Health Sciences, as a part time program for hospital and community health care professionals and others who support breastfeeding mothers. The content focuses on support for healthy and problematic breastfeeding.
Who can take it
Students must be currently working with women/families in a caregiver or support role related to breastfeeding.
Students are frequently Registered Nurses, Registered Practical Nurses, Midwives, Physicians or Dieticians. The program is not limited to these health care professionals, as many others provide support in a breastfeeding situation. The program manager will respond to any questions of eligibility.
How many courses are there?
The program of studies has been revised to meet new IBLCE curriculum requirements. It consists of three theory courses and a clinical course.
NRSG10073: Breastfeeding Basic 36 hours
NRSG10074: Breastfeeding Management 36 hours
NRSG10075: Advanced Breastfeeding Practice 36 hours
CLIN10026: Breastfeeding Clinical Experience 24 hours
How are the courses delivered?
The course are to be offered on a part time basis in a distance education format and occasionally in class. The DE courses are spread over four (4) months each semester to allow acquisition of knowledge, completion of assignments, quizzes and to accommodate work and personal time.
Courses run during the fall, winter and spring semesters. You can find a full program of study information as well as course descriptions and cost at http://cecat.mohawkcollege.ca
What is involved with the clinical experience?
The clinical experience complements the theory modules. This is your opportunity to apply the theory in a clinical setting and can usually be completed in your own community. The actual timing of the clinical placement is arranged individually to fit around your work and personal obligations. The clinical experience must be completed before the course end date. Medical clearance through Mohawk College Health Services is required prior to starting clinical experience. There is a one-time fee of $115 for this clearance. Questions can be directed to Health Services at IAHSHealthServices@mohawkcollege.ca
I work with breastfeeding moms and babies now. Do I have to complete the clinical experience?
If you already work with breastfeeding families, application can be made through Prior Learning Assessment to challenge this experience. Proof of work experience must be provided. The Program Manager should be contacted for further information.
If you have further questions please contact the Program Manager.
