How is this program offered?
The Oncology Nursing certificate is a part-time program offered through print based distance education. Courses run during the fall, winter and spring semesters. You can find full program of study information as well as course descriptions and cost in the current Continuing Education Catalogue.
Who can take this program?
You must be a Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) with a certificate of registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO). You will be asked to provide a copy of your CURRENT registration from CNO when you start the course.
Tell me more about distance education. What should I expect?
The Distance Education Office mails out start-up information to you during the week the course starts. This information includes who your tutor is and how to contact them, as well as information about assignments and when they are due. You will also receive information about learning materials which can be purchased through the Bookstore. Check what learning materials you need for courses at http://mohawk.bookware3000.ca.
Can I take the courses in any order?
You must start with the first course, NRSGNSCC1 Introduction to Oncology Nursing. Once you have successfully completed this course you can take the remaining theory courses in whatever order you like.
There is a clinical experience. What do I need to do for this?
The clinical experience is 48 hours and can be completed in your own community. In order to register for this clinical experience you must have completed all theory courses first.
Other requirements include medical clearance from Mohawk College Health Services; please note there is a one-time fee of $115 for this clearance. If you have paid this fee for another clinical experience through Mohawk you do not need to pay it again. You will however require your medical clearance to be updated. Contact Health Services if you have further questions at IAHShealthservices@mohawkcollege.ca.
You will develop a learning plan which is your opportunity to design your clinical to meet your learning needs. The program manager will assist you with this and help you identify the appropriate clinical setting in which to meet your learning needs.
What if I already work in oncology? Do I still have to complete the clinical hours?
If you work in oncology nursing, and have a minimum of three years full-time experience (or equivalent) you can apply through Prior Learning Assessment to challenge this experience. You will be asked to prepare a portfolio demonstrating how you meet the clinical objectives through your current practice. The program manager can assist you with this.
If you have further questions please contact Amy Boyer, Program Manager.
