PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Psychosocial Rehabilitation (PSR) is an approach to service delivery that supports the recovery of people with prolonged mental illness.  The program attracts people with experience in the field either as a person working towards their own recovery, a family member, a volunteer and/or as a provider of mental health services. Learners develop an understanding of the foundations of PSR, as well as the knowledge and skills related to integrating the approach within practice and programs.   Successful completion of the program helps to prepares students for Certification as a CPRP (Certified Psychiatric Rehabilitation Practitioner) through the United States Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association www.uspra.org  

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Note that an Approval Process has been established for entry into the program and HSCIPSR01 Psychosocial Rehabilitation Foundations. Experience in and a current connection to the field of mental health either as a person working towards their own recovery and/or a family member and/or a volunteer or mental health worker is required. If you are interested in enrolling in the PSR Certificate program, but do not have related knowledge and experience, registration in HLTH10016 Introduction to Mental Health is recommended.  Please contact Christine Grace McMulkin, Program Manager to discuss your interest in joining the program and determining the best starting point.

To obtain the Certificate, you must successfully complete the following six modules, starting with HSCIPSR01 and ending with HSCIPSR06.

NOTES

The Psychosocial Rehabilitation Foundations course is the prerequisite course to all others in the PSR Program and is ideally followed by the second course: Mental Health Services, Programs and Organizations. Mental Health Practitioner Roles and Competencies and the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Process come next. To gain the greatest benefit from the Current Trends in Mental Health course, we strongly recommend that it be the fifth course you take. The final course is Independent Study in Psychosocial Rehabilitation and all previous five courses must be successfully completed prior to registering in this course.

A PSR/RPS Ontario Bursary in the amount of $100.00/course is available for students enrolled in a Mohawk College PSR Program course. Individuals who are recovering their mental health and in need of financial assistance are invited to apply.
