Program Description
Biotechnology Technician Diploma
Mohawk's Biotechnology Technician is a two-year Ontario College Diploma program offered at Fennell Campus in Hamilton, Ontario.
The program prepares motivated and dynamic individuals for a future career working in one of the most rapidly expanding fields in Canada. Graduates demonstrate knowledge and skills in scientific methods and experimental techniques, using established principles of quality assurance and manufacturing.
Classroom instruction, combined with hands-on laboratory experience, provide students with knowledge to perform tasks in the following areas:
- DNA and protein absorption spectrophotometry
- Agarose gel DNA electrophoresis
- Ion exchange and thin layer chromatography
- Basic techniques in microbiology
- Micropipetting, extractions, titrations, centrifugation and pH measurements using GLP
Students will learn the fundamentals of:
- pharmacology
- biochemistry
- genetics and genetic engineering
- cell biology
- microbiology
- analytical instrumentation
- biochemical engineering
The classroom experience is enhanced by paid work semesters, extremely useful in ensuring graduates are work ready.
Program Recognition
- The Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT) recognizes this program as meeting all the academic requirements for certification in the Certified Technician (CTech) category.
Opportunities for Graduates
- Graduates and final year students are immediately eligible to be registered as associate members of The Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT)
- Additional requirements to become fully certified are the jurisdiction of OACETT
Degree Opportunities with Charles Sturt University of Australia
Graduates of the Mohawk Biotechnology Technician program (444) will be eligible to enter the BSc in Forensic Biotechnology program at Charles Sturt University of Australia upon successful completion of two bridging courses, (Distance education only) Physiological Sciences and Introduction to Forensic Science.
The full-time program may be completed over two calendar years, or part time over four/five years. Combined studies will be completed at Mohawk's Fennel Campus, McMaster University, and the Burlington Ontario campus of Charles Sturt University.
