Applied Music Audition FAQ

  • Does my application to the applied music program automatically mean I will receive an audition?
In order to be eligible for an audition, you must complete the following:

Auditions are scheduled on a first come, first serve basis and we have limited number of seats available for each instrument.

  • What if I applied to the program through OCAS past the February 1st deadline?
Auditions are scheduled at pre-set times on a first come, first serve basis. We recommend calling the Admissions department to ensure there is still space available for your instrument major. We require you send in your online RSVP as soon as possible.

  • I have applied to more than one program and/or College/University; the due dates for me to confirm my acceptance for those programs is May 1st. My audition is scheduled after May 1st. What should I do?
You should always accept any offers of admission that you are considering prior to their expiry date. Once Mohawk’s audition process is completed, offers of admission will be extended to those applicants who have been selected for our programs. If you are successful, and we send you an offer of admission, you can still accept our offer on the Ontario college website, even if you have already confirmed another offer previously. Ontariocolleges.ca will inform us that you have accepted our offer and any other offers you may have accepted previously will automatically be cancelled.

  • Can I apply for more than one instrument major?
No. Applications are for one instrument major only. During your audition, you may mention that you play an additional instrument and you may be given further instruction at that time. The music audition fee can be applied for up to two instrument streams. There may be opportunities to play additional instruments during your studies in ensemble classes.

  • What if I am uncertain what category I fit into; contemporary or classical?
For assistance please call our Music department at 905-575-2144. We can help you assess which category you fit into. Typically, if you play rock or pop, you will likely fit into the contemporary category.

  • What happens if I am placed on a waitlist for an audition?
Auditions are schedule for applicants who submit the Music Audition webform. If you are on a waitlist we will inform you by email. Communications are sent from music.auditions [at] mohawkcollege.ca (music[dot]auditions[at]mohawkcollege[dot]ca), if you do not receive any correspondence please check your junk mail folder or music.auditions [at] mohawkcollege.ca (subject: Music%20Audition) (contact us).

  • Can I reschedule or change the date and time of my audition?
No. Due to the fact that we have a large amount of auditions to organize in coordination with several instructors, we cannot accommodate date change requests. Please keep these dates available if you wish to have an audition. If you have an urgent concern regarding your audition date, please contact the Music Department; email is preferred:
    • Email: music.auditions [at] mohawkcollege.ca (music[dot]auditions[at]mohawkcollege[dot]ca)
    • Phone: 905-575-2144

  • I am travelling to my audition from a distance. Can I schedule my audition later in the day?
We understand that many of our applicants travel from a distance, and we take this into account when scheduling auditions; however, all of our auditions are scheduled in the morning and early afternoon and we cannot always accommodate later audition slots.

  • Can family or friends accompany me to my audition?
Yes. Family and friends are welcome to accompany you to the College. Once you enter the waiting area in the Music wing, we kindly ask that family and friends leave the waiting areas until your audition is complete. There is an on-site cafeteria and a Tim Horton’s.

  • If I live far away, can I submit a video audition?
Yes, anyone living further than 100km away and unable to attend in person may submit a video audition. Applicants who wish to submit a video audition are required to submit their video through the Music Audition webform. Applicants are encouraged to upload their audition video to YouTube. Upon submitting your virtual performance video, you will be invited to do an online theory test, ear-training test, followed by a question and answer session with one of our faculty.

  • I have my Royal Conservatory Level 4 Certificate. Do I still need to write the theory test?
No. If you have your Royal Conservatory Level 4 Certificate, you do not need to write the theory test. Please bring an original copy of your certificate with you to the audition. This certificate must be presented on the day of your audition in order to be exempted from the theory test.

  • What do I need to bring with me to my audition?
Your instrument, any sheet music you may need, accompaniment if a vocalist, sticks and brushes if a drummer (we will provide a drum set) and any Royal Conservatory Certificates you may have.

  • I am a vocalist. Can I bring my own accompaniment?
Yes you may. If you would like us to provide accompaniment for you on the day of your audition, you will need to inform us of this request in advance and provide us with sheet music (music.auditions [at] mohawkcollege.ca (music[dot]auditions[at]mohawkcollege[dot]ca)). Karaoke machines are not recommended.

  • Do I need to memorize my music pieces?
No. You are more than welcome to bring sheet music with you to your audition.
