Admission Requirements
Minimum requirements for admission to the Practical Nursing Diploma & Practical Nursing Aboriginal Communities Diploma program
Deadline to apply for January is no later than June 1st
NOTE: This is a limited enrolment program. Possession of the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission to the program.
- OSSD or equivalent (GED, College and Career Preparation) including:
- Grade 12 English, C or U or equivalent
- Grade 11 or 12 Mathematics, C, M or U level (M or U recommended)
- 2 Grade 11 or 12 Sciences, C or U level
- Options are available for mature applicants. Please contact Admissions for more information.
- It is recommended that all applicants have a good working knowledge of computers including Microsoft Office Applications.
- An English language proficiency test may be required as it is essential that applicants demonstrate the English language writing and speaking skills to successfully cope with academic and clinical placement components of the program.
- In addition to the successful completion of all admission requirements, all applicants to this program must complete a mandatory standardized Health Occupation Aptitude Examination (HOAE) as part of the selection process. There is a fee of $50.00 for this test.
Offers of admission to this highly competitive program will be made based on a combination of test results (50%) and ranking of academic history (50%). Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Pre-Admission Testing-HOAE for more information.
Effective January, 2005 the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) requires all applicants for registration or reinstatement from within Canada to provide a recent Criminal Record Synopsis (CIPC check) as part of the registration process.
Pre-Clinical Requirements:
All accepted applicants are required to have the following completed prior to clinical placement and are responsible for the associated costs:
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification, C/AED – Health Care Provider Level; recertification required annually while in the program
- Up-to-date immunization record
- Mask fit testing, required every two years while in the program;
- Up-to-date Police Clearance – Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS)*
*Registered students who have been convicted of an offence under the criminal code for which they have not been pardoned may be denied the opportunity to enter or continue in a clinical placement while in the program.
