Overview

Mohawk's Aviation Technician – Aircraft Structures program has the highest overall student satisfaction of any comparable program in Ontario.

This Transport Canada approved program provides theory and hands-on training to prepare students for certification by Transport Canada as an Aircraft Structures Engineer AME-S.

Program Highlights

  • Combine theory and practice using state-of-the-art facilities at Mohawk’s Fennell and Stoney Creek campuses and aircraft maintenance repair and overhaul facilities at the Hamilton International Airport
  • Work on vintage aircraft to modern light aircraft, heavy jet transports and helicopters
  • Program includes composites, NDE, welding, painting and refinishing
  • Upon completion, this two-year training program will provide 12 months credit towards the 36 months practical work experience required for certification

Location

Students will be required to travel between Mohawk’s Fennell and Stoney Creek Campuses.

Students will also be required to travel to the Hamilton International Airport for instruction at the Mohawk College Aviation facility. Although buses presently serve these routes, the hours are intermittent. Personal automobile transportation is recommended.

Applicants to the Aviation Technician – Aircraft Structures Diploma program must have the minimum requirements for admission

  • OSSD or equivalent (Mohawk Academic Upgrading, GED) including:
    • Grade 12 English, C or U or equivalent
    • Grade 12 Mathematics, MAP4C ≥ 60%; or MCT4C; or any U or equivalent
    • Senior Physics is recommended

Option are available for mature applicants.

Required Student Attendance

Student attendance will be documented by the applicable instructor in 1/4 hour increments.

Students missing more than 5% of any major subject area will not qualify for a certificate with a Transport Canada (TC) approval number.

Information for New Students

Class Start Date and Parking:

All 1st and 2nd year students start classes on Monday, August 22, 2016 at 9:00am in Room F118 at Fennell Campus. It is mandatory to attend as you will receive your timetable.

Parking Passes for August 22, 2016 – May 19, 2017:
(Fennell & Stoney Creek Campuses):
Purchase your parking pass or car pool pass from the Parking Office located at the Fennell Campus, Room F101.

Safety:
Ensure safety shoes, safety glasses, respirator and the ear defenders are comfortable, as you will be wearing them for lengthy periods of time.

Tool Kit:

  • Tool vendors will be on site Monday, August 22nd.
  • Tools (see required Tools List).
  • All tool sizes to be Imperial Measurement (INCHES). No metric tools required.
  • Tools do not need to be brand new.
  • Students may purchase their tools from whomever they choose provided the tools are of good quality.
  • The tool kit must be complete (as listed) and ready for inspection by mid-September. (Note: Your instructors will indicate if you need any of the tooling prior to mid-September).

Coveralls:
Coveralls will be purchased from the college supplier.

Laptops/Notebooks/Tablets:

  • A laptop/notebook/tablet is strongly recommended for effective learning.
  • Every course has an online presence at Mohawk College eLearn.
  • E-books are available at a reduced cost from online suppliers.
  • Maintenance manuals are provided and available online.

Required Travel Between Campuses & the Airport

Students in the Aviation Technician - Aircraft Structures Diploma program will be required to travel between Mohawk College campuses (Main Campus on Fennell Ave, and Stoney Creek Campus on Barton Street) in Hamilton.

Students will also be required to travel to the Hamilton International Airport for instruction at the Mohawk College Aviation Facility, the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum and other airport maintenance organizations. Although buses presently serve these routes, the hours are intermittent. Personal automobile transportation is recommended to facilitate student movement between locations.
