Explanation of the Promotion Process

How did you do this term? Are you able to continue in your program next term? How can we help you succeed and reach your goals?

Each semester, Mohawk students go through the program promotion process, where the college determines if students are in good academic standing based on things like grade point average (GPA) and their number of passed/failed courses.

Your academic standing for the term can be seen with your grades in the "Academics" tab in your MyMohawk portal. You will also receive an official communication from the College to your student email (firstname.lastname @mohawkcollege.ca) indicating your academic standing shortly after each term ends, which will provide more information and detail important next steps.

An overall Weighted Grade Point Average (WGPA) of at least 60% and completion of all courses in your program of studies is required for graduation in most programs, though some programs have Exceptions to the Required Weighted GPA

Refer to the Program Promotion and Graduation Requirements Policy (SS-3103-2009) for more information and details about your academic promotion status.

Not sure what your academic standing really means?

Promote with Good Standing

Promote with good standing means that your academic performance fully met your program's particular requirements this term.

As a result, have been promoted to the next semester of your program of study in good standing.

Promote with Advice

Promote with advice means that your academic performance did not fully meet your program's particular requirements this term.

This means that you should meet with your Student Success Advisor (SSA) or Program Coordinator to find out if you have additional program requirements to meet before you can progress to the next semester of your program.

Probation

Probation means that your academic performance did not meet your program's particular requirements this term.

You are strongly encouraged to meet with your Student Success Advisor (SSA) before you register for your courses next semester. This process is put in place to ensure we can help you identify the courses and resources that can help you succeed academically.

Once you meet the requirements to return to good standing, you will no longer be on probation.

It is not uncommon for students to go through the probation process, and many continue on to find success, confidence, and enjoyment in their chosen program. We are confident that you can be successful, too, and we are here to help you every step of the way.

Compulsory Withdrawal

Compulsory withdrawal means that your academic performance did not meet your program's particular requirements for good standing this term, and that you are not currently eligible to progress to the next semester of your program.

We know that college success does not always follow a predictable path. College students have complicated lives, and each term, we work with many students who have personal, financial, health, and family circumstances that affect their academics.

We are committed to working with you to help you be successful. Please check the official communication sent to your student email (firstname.lastname @mohawkcollege.ca) to learn more about your next steps (as these vary depending on your semester of study).
