Terms of Teaching Contract

Salary
Salaries are based on a monthly rate, and are determined by the area of specialization and the combination of courses you are qualified to teach. Salaries are paid each month (taxes are deducted from your salary) and will be offered after a review of the applicants credentials. In addition to the monthly salary, the following may be included in the majority of contracts:

  1. Travel Bonus:
    One semester contracts (about 4-5 months): 1000 RMB (paid at one time, at the end of the semester)
  2. Overseas Insurance
    One semester contracts: maximum 238 RMB per month
  3. Air Fare
    International and domestic return airfare (economy class, no stop over) from the airport closest to where the teacher lives and transportation to Xi'an or Beijing, China.
  4. Visa
    Working Visa (one time entry). The institution will provide an invitation letter and support the application for a work visa for the applicant according to the administrative procedures for inviting foreign cultural and educational experts, by which the applicant shall get visa in his or her country. The university is responsible for other administrative procedures and will assist in obtaining a residence permit extension, health check-up and application for Foreign Experts Certificate by the State administration of Foreign Experts Affairs, public security bureau.
  5. Accommodation
    Free single room accommodation with private bathroom, kitchen (for two teachers), shared sitting room, single bed, computer (access to the internet), TV, telephone, air conditioner.
  6. Food Allowance
    Teachers are expected to pay for their own meals.
  7. Teaching Duties
    Teaching contracts are for up to 14 hours per week. Number of hours and teaching schedules are determined by the University and issued to teachers upon arrival, at the beginning of each term. Teachers are expected to participate in academic activities by the Department of International Education and are under the Departmental administration.
  8. Contract Length
    Contracts are made for one term. Length may vary from 9 - 18 weeks. 
  9. Contract Renewal
    The option to renew is by mutual agreement.
  10. Income Tax
    Please contact Revenue Canada to inquire about taxation rules for working overseas.
  11. Health Care
    The health allowance that is provided in the contract is limited to the Chinese Renminbi amounts listed in each contract. It is up to individuals to arrange additional out of country Canadian health coverage. For information on the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) contact the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-term Care at www.gov.on.ca or call the ministry INFO line at 1 (800) 268-1154. Also, travelers may be interested in contacting International Association for Medical Assistance to Travelers (IAMAT) before leaving home, to learn about their services.   12. Immunization
    You are responsible for meeting immunization requirements for your destination. Please contact the your local immunization agency for information. Some teachers choose to travel to southern China or tropical countries before returning to Canada. Immunization requirements vary from country to country. Qualified Canadian immunization agencies can give you information on requirements or suggested requirements for all countries.
