ESL Program Information
Mohawk College offers international students three comprehensive English programs which focus on four specific skills utilized in an academic context: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. The goal is to prepare students for success in post-secondary programs.
The modules:

are offered at each of the 3 different levels.
Customized English Language Programs
After assessing your English language abilities, we will guide you toward classes for your individual skill levels to quickly put you on your path to success.
- Language upgrading courses in listening, speaking, reading and writing.
- Improve your English communication skills in our computer labs using the latest software.
- Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced levels of instruction.
- Join our Mohawk College Conversation Club.
Applicants entering Mohawk College Post-Secondary Diploma programs require either:
- a minimum TOEFL score of 550 paper based, 70-80 Internet based, PG courses 560 (88)
- or an IELTS score of 6.0, with no band less than 5.5
- or students can take our English as a Second Language
The Modules
Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing are each offered at different levels. Your language will be assessed to determine your appropriate language proficiency level. A custom timetable will be developed to meet your needs. A number of paths are available to you:
- Intensive ESL Only
This program is for individuals who want to upgrade their language skills. - Intensive ESL + College Credit
This program is for individuals who want to upgrade their language skills, and if at the appropriate level, you may take one college credit course. - General Arts and Science Applied Communications
1-4 Semesters (Depending on assessment and the student’s goals)
** There is a placement test for new students to determine their eligibility and at which module level they will begin. English Language programs are offered in April, September and January. Please see the start dates for more information
