Co-op Employment & Internships
Possible Salary Calculations
Coop paid work placement jobs are available in cooperation with our Co-op Office. Some Programs offer a full year co-op internship, which is built into the program, that allows you to help pay for your education and gain valuable work experience. Employers post job opportunities at Mohawk College and students registered in a co-op program, apply for the job of their choice.
To calculate how much you can earn in the co-op program look up the dollars per hour and multiply that times 35 hours per week for approximately 15 weeks times the number of co-op terms less income tax at about 25%. Example:
$14 x 35 x 15 = $7,350
x 3 co-op terms = 22,050
less tax of 25% = ~ $16,500
Check out your program as it will be different and be conservative in your estimate. PLUS, if you get a job after graduation, you can work for up to three years and earn conservatively an additional $61,000 (($15 x 35 x 52 x 3) – 25% ) …now that might help you pay for your education
Co-op / Internship Study and Work Program
The Co-op / Internship Program offers the highest possible value for International students. Students can study and work to gain valuable experience while helping to pay for expenses. The work experience also counts toward points for Permanent Residence status. Students are also able to extend their visa after graduation and work for up to three years. Visit the detail outlined on the Co-op web site to see when the program offers the co-op / Internship work periods.
International Students who have enrolled in a coop/internship program will need to apply for a work permit. The International Department will provide a letter of support outlining your coop program which must be submitted with an application for a permit. We recommend students in a coop program, apply three months before their work term is scheduled to begin to allow sufficient time to process your application.
