Students will be engaged in hands-on experiences to develop a strong understanding of how design transforms from a digital concept to a finished product. The project-based learning will develop an understanding of how to effectively design to meet production compliance and industry standards.
    • Illustration stream
Students in our Illustration stream will develop an individual style through the application of traditional skills and mediums (e.g. graphite, coloured pencils, Copic markers, gouache, acrylic and watercolour painting), as well as digital illustration skills and tools (e.g. Wacom digital drawing tablet), based on strong design theory and aesthetic judgment. Advanced techniques include integrating traditional mediums with digital media.
    • User Experience/User Interface
Students in our UX/UI stream will create and design web based products entirely from the user’s perspective through experiential and project based learning. In UX (User Experience), they will engage in design thinking, usability testing, site architecture, user flows, etc. In UI (User Interface) students will use industry standard tools to style wireframes, high fidelity mockups and prototypes of web products and apps based on interaction design and aesthetics. Students will gain practical skills and experience in all areas of the UX/UI development process.

Learning Outcomes

Program Learning Outcomes, often referred to as ‘Program Standards', set out the essential learning that a student must achieve before being deemed ready to graduate.

In many cases these program learning outcomes were developed by the Ministry of Colleges and Universities (MCU) in consultation with employers and educators who are experts in the program field. To ensure the outcomes remain current and in line with industry needs, we invite our employers, graduates working in the field and current students to re-examine and update them during regular, ongoing program review focus groups.

Within a couple of weeks of graduating, I was able to secure my dream job as a Graphic Designer. I believe that my training and experience at Mohawk College gave me an edge over other candidates from other schools."

Mohawk prepared me for the real world with the wide array of classes and the DPLC. They also helped me get my full time job right out of school! The people are great and the Fork makes a really good Pulled Pork poutine and buffalo chicken wrap.

The Graphic Design program at Mohawk College was a wonderful experience. When I stepped in those doors on the very first day, I have just started a new chapter. I met a lot of great people and the professors made the classes enjoyable.

The Advanced Graphic Design program at Mohawk College provided me with all the tools I needed to succeed as a graphic designer. Working hands-on with industry standard equipment gave me the confidence and skills to integrate into the workforce seamlessly. This program goes above and beyond academic training, it was as though I was walking into each job interview with 3 years of actual work experience.

Ahmed, Ummara

Mohawk’s Graphic Design program taught me a set of hard skills that I use on a daily basis while working on websites. I found the small class sizes and the applied approach offered at the College to be particularly invaluable to my career growth. To me this was much favourable than sitting in a large university lecture hall with little to no interaction with the professor. I can’t stress enough how necessary refined design skills are in what seems like a growing sea of theoretical thinkers. Mohawk College offers you just that – the opportunity to develop and expand those skills.

My 3 years at Mohawk were some of the best times I’ve ever had. Instantly the instructors and support staff were accepting and eager to share their knowledge which ultimately created an amazing creative and social environment. The variety of skills I learned at Mohawk (production to design, photography to web) has help me grow professionally and has definitely given me a competitive edge which is extremely important in the marketing industry. Thanks Mohawk!
