Mandatory Laptop Program Information

As you may be aware a mandatory laptop program has been implemented. This initiative was started by our Journalism program to enhance the student learning environment and increase student satisfaction, providing each graduate with industry leading hardware and software to assist with obtaining his or her career goals. It also reflects a trend towards convergence in the industry, in which individual reporters are routinely expected to file across several different media platforms, and edit their own material.
If you already own an Apple laptop which meets our minimum standard of running the required software, a new purchase will not be required. We currently have a partnership agreement with Apple Canada and are pleased to provide you with the following student discount information on purchasing your new MacBook Pro. These figures were in place for the last first-year class and may be subject to change.
We would like to once again advise that the laptop and software purchases are a mandatory requirement of our Journalism program.
We have provided the minimum requirement information for your MacBook Pro at our online store. To begin, you can login to the MoCoMotion portal at http://mocomo.mohawkcollege.ca with your user name and password, select the Student tab and navigate to find the link to our Mohawk Online Apple Store.
This page will feature a link to our “Mohawk Recommended Systems Store”. Follow that link to view a list of the laptops we recommend. Your online purchase will also let you take advantage of the “$100 Gift Certificate for the Mac App Store” promotion offered by Apple, available until September 20, 2011.
The minimum we require is the 13-inch MacBook Pro 2.7GHz Intel Dual-core Intel Core i7 – as shown in recommended systems. It includes the following specifications:
- 2.7GHz Dual-core Intel Core i7
- 4GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB
- 500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
- SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
- Backlit Keyboard (English) & User's Guide
The cost of this machine can be found on this site but is approximately $1,449.00 (AppleCare extended warranty, taxes and required software are extra).
You also have the option of upgrading to a faster MacBook Pro, also listed on the web site. All the configurations include a one-year Apple warranty but it is highly recommended that you upgrade your computer to the three-year Apple warranty program for “worry free” use of your new computer. It is highly recommended that you purchase the extended warranty from Apple, regardless of where you purchase your equipment.
If you chose to purchase your own RAM, please be advised that installation of RAM must be completed by an authorized Apple technician or the warranty on the computer will be void.
The software you will need to purchase is Final Cut Pro X, Office for Mac, and the Design Standard version of Adobe Creative Suite 5.
Adobe Creative Suite Design Standard can be purchased at our Fennell Campus Bookstore in August. At this time, the best estimate on the cost of this product is $230.99 plus taxes. If you wish to upgrade from Design Standard to the Design Premium version of Creative Suite 5, you can do so at a substantial discount.
