Two Soccer Wins for Mohawk
Mohawk's two soccer teams came up winners at Redeemer Friday in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association play.
The men whipped the Royals 5-1 while the women notched a 3-1 decision.
The men's team jumped off to a 3-0 first half lead and were never
headed. Ross McMillan fired three goals, with singles going to Matt
Gera on a penalty and Gaafar Wahbi.
Nick Bokma scored the lone Redeemer goal.
Mohawk head coach Richard Bennett said Redeemer is a hard working team
so his side tried to play more ball control this time around and were
able to set the pace once they got the early goals.
The Mountaineers record improved to 2 wins and 2 ties in their four games.
They are home to Conestoga Tuesday October 3 at 4:30 at Mohawk Sports Park.
The women had to rally for their win as Redeemer's Phoebe Mitton scored the lone first half goal.
Amanda Celeste got the Mountaineers even early in the second half and
the score remained 1-1 until a heads up play by Kristi Cossar with just
a few minutes remaining. Cossar fired home a quickly taken free kick
while Redeemer was organizing their wall. Amanda Edmonds then scored
the third goal on a wicked bounce past the Royals' goalkeeper. It was
the last kick of the game.
Mohawk head coach Renzo Castellani
felt his team played well, carrying on from the 2-2 draw with Fanshawe
Tuesday. After conceding the opening goal he said his defense picked up
very well.
They (Redeemer) have three or four players who are
really, really fast, so we shut down their fast players and the whole
game changed."
The Mountaineers now have a win and tie in their
first four games. They will host Conestoga Tuesday October 3 at 4:30 at
Mohawk Sports Park.
