Women’s Basketball

The Mohawk women’s basketball team ended its five game losing streak to start the season with a 53-46 victory over the St. Clair Saints December 1 at the Fennell Gym. The Mountaineers came storming out of the gate with a 22-6 lead, but late in the first half the visitors from Windsor put together a 16-4 run and trailed only 26-22 going to the dressing room. The teams continued to battle in the second half and the game was up for grabs until six minutes to go when Mohawk went on a 9-0 run. First year guard Katie Goodburn led the Mountaineers with 19 points. Mohawk head coach Kelly Dunham said, “Katie is starting to play like we expected. That’s why we recruited her (from John McGregor Secondary School in Chatham)” Lisamarie Iavarone had 14 points and Melisa Zwolak added 10. The women’s basketball team is now off until the New Year.

Men’s Basketball

The men’s basketball squad saw its OCAA record fall to 3-4, beaten 96-84 by St. Clair December 1 at the Fennell Gym. It was a real see-saw affair in the first 20 minutes as there were ten lead changes until the Saints took a 41-40 margin to the break. But the Mountaineers fortunes changed dramatically at 6:45 of the second half. St. Clair took a 65-64 lead, but more importantly, Mohawk ace Panyin Kyei fouled out of the game and the Saints marched to victory. Igor Trbojevic led Mohawk with 18 points. Matt Bruyn added 15, Zivojin Tolmac scored 14 and Nick Gaspic had 12.

The Mountaineers, now in a four-way tie for second place in the West Region, are idle in the OCAA until January, but have a tournament at Sheridan December 20.

Men’s Volleyball

The Mohawk men’s volleyball team rolled to another victory in OCAA play November 29 defeating the Humber Hawks 3-0 in Etobicoke. The scores were 25-21, 25-18, 25-9. Jasmin Cull had 14 kills and two service aces for 16 points. Kevin Watson contributed 10 kills The defending champion Mountaineers, now 4-0, are the only undefeated team in the Central West Region and are tied in points with Nipissing (4-2), atop the group.

The Mohawk men don’t play again until next month.

Women’s Volleyball

The news was not good for the Mohawk women’s volleyball team. Despite a good start, they bowed 1-3 at Humber. The scores were 25-22, 16-25,20-25, 24-26. Slavica Beader led the Mountaineers with 13 points from five kills, one stuff block and seven aces. Janette Jakubiec scored 12 points from nine kills and three blocks while Stacy Dafoehad 8 kills and two aces for 10 points. Mohawk is now 4-2, which is third in the Central West. They trail 5-1 Humber by two points. Nipissing leads the region at 7-0.

The Mohawk women are off until January.

All-Star Volleyball

A pair of Mohawk players showed how important they are to their respective varsity teams at the 14th Annual Ontario Colleges Athletic Association All-Star Volleyball Games at Fleming College in Peterborough December 2.

Mountaineer “Middle” Janette Jakubiec was Most Valuable player for the West Team which defeated the East 2-1 in the women’s match. Janette had four kills, three stuff blocks and one service ace for eight points in her portion of the game. Mohawk’s Brian McEnhill was co-coach of the winning side.

Meanwhile, in the men’s match, Mohawk “Libero” Matt Schnarr was the MVP for the West in their 2-1 triumph over the East squad.
