Mohawk Cops Double Titles
Mohawk
College captured both the men's and women's crowns in an invitational
volleyball tournament at Fanshawe College in London over the weekend.
The men did not lose a set, sweeping all five opponents in two straight games.
In pool play, the Mountaineers defeated Seneca, Cambrian, and Loyalist,
then went on to take two straight from Seneca in the semi final before
besting host Fanshawe 2-0 in the final.
Mohawk's Peter Sniuolis
was the MVP of the tournament, while his team mates Jasmine Cull and
Kevin Watson, were named to the All- Star Team.
Mohawk head
coach James Bradley noted his team started a bit slowly as they had
defeated the University of Waterloo four sets to one on Friday and were
definitely tired to start tourney play the next morning. But he added
it was a good thing for the team as it'll be a situation they'll face
later in the season. He noted his team got better as the tournament
wore on.
The men have another tournament coming up October 20-21 at Durham.
The women were victorious in their first tourney of the year. In the
prelims the Mountaineers swept Seneca 2-0, lost 1-2 to Cambrian and
blanked Loyalist 2-0. In the semis, Mohawk edged host Fanshawe 2-1 and
then downed St. Clair in the final, also 2-1.
Leah Waxman was
the tourney MVP and newcomer Sarah Borycki, a middle player out of St.
Thomas More, was selected as an All-Star.
An obviously pleased
Mohawk head coach Brian McEnhill managed to get all of his players into
the tournament and said everyone did well. He feels he has a lot of
depth. The rookies are battling the veterans for positions and he's
looking forward to a good season.
The Mohawk women have another tournament October 20-21 at Sheridan.
