Mohawk Cross-Country Opener
The Mohawk College cross country team competed for the first time this early season, playing co-host with Redeemer College at an invitational meet in Ancaster Saturday.
Hollie Gordon from Sir Sandford Fleming of Peterborough won the women’s 5 km race in a time of 22:34. Redeemer’s Carrie Van Dorp was ninth. Margaret Myjak, the lone female runner from Mohawk in the event, finished 26th in 28:13. Myjak, who is also a varsity badminton star at Mohawk, returned to running after taking a year off and Mountaineers coach Wayne Collins feels she has improved from two years ago. Mohawk ace Tama Stainton did not compete in the race.
Mohawk was not involved in the team competition which was won by Humber. Redeemer was sixth.
The men’s 8 km event was taken by Fanshawe’s John Mason in 28:51. Justin Hensen was the fastest of eight Mohawk runners, finishing 25th in 34:00. Coach Collins was impressed by Hensen and Peter Jennings, who wound up 43rd. It was the first Mohawk race for the two of them. Andre Simon, coming off a busy triathlon season, did not compete in the race. Peter Kranenburg was Redeemer’s top finisher in 39th. Humber won the men’s team title. Mohawk finished eighth. Redeemer was not part of the team competition.
