Mohawk Soccer Kicks Off Wednesday
The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association regular season kicks off for Mohawk’s soccer teams Wednesday (Sept. 20) as the Sheridan Bruins check into town.
Renzo Castellani’s women’s team, which won the bronze medal at the OCAA championship last year has several returning players this season. They include OCAA League All-Stars Tara Bonitatibus and Ali Bettger. Others coming back are Nicole Brohman, Kristi Cossar, Melissa Miles, Jillian Fairweather, Andrea Bonitatibus and goalkeeper Vanessa Ventresca.
Mohawk posted two wins in the Algonquin Thunder Tourney in Ottawa a couple of weekend’s back to prepare for the regular season.
Richard Bennett’s men’s team which was 0-1 in the Algonquin event, losing to the highly rated club side St. Anthony Italia of Ottawa, had a large turnout for training this year and have only four returnees. The list includes Matt Gera, Scott MacLeod, Angelo Luzi and Joseph Grieci. Coach Bennett concedes it’s a rebuilding year after his squad made it to the OCAA tourney last year, but he is quick to point out the newcomers are experienced players, whose adjustment will be going from a club setup to the varsity scene.
Both games with Sheridan Wednesday kick off at Mohawk Sports Park at 4:30.
