Mohawk Volleyball Receives More Accolades

Volleyball stars from Mohawk College earned top honours as Major Awards were announced at the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Volleyball Championships Banquet in Barrie this morning (Thursday February 22).

Jasmin CullJasmin Cull of Mohawk College was named OCAA Player of the Year and CCAA All-Canadian. Jasmin won the OCAA scoring title this year averaging an impressive 5.81 PPG. In twelve games for the Mountaineers, Jasmin recorded 164 kills, 34 aces and 11 blocks for a total of 209 points. Referred to as the most dominant player ever to play Volleyball at Mohawk College, Athletic Director Laurie Cahill notes, “Even with so much natural talent, Jasmin has continually improved and excelled with hard work and additional practice in and out of season. Whether hitting from the back or frontcourt, or blasting a dynamic jump serve, Jasmin would be an All-Star on any team in Canada. His play is guaranteed to bring fans to their feet!” Earlier in the year, Jasmin was named CCAA Athlete of the Month for Ontario. Mohawk finished the year 11-1 and are looking to repeat last year’s gold medal performance this weekend at the OCAA Championships.

Peter Sniuolis Feb 20072005-06 OCAA Athlete of the Year, Peter Sniuolis of Mohawk College added another piece of hardware to his trophy collection picking up his second consecutive CCAA All-Canadian Award. The fourth-year Ancaster native played in all 12 matches for Mohawk this season leading his team to the top of the Central West Region. Peter becomes the first Mohawk athlete to win back-to-back CCAA All-Canadian awards in Men’s Volleyball. Playing the setter position, Peter is the leader of Mohawk’s offence and is one of the premier ball distributors in the league. From the setter position Peter has also accumulated 24 aces, 16 kills and 10 blocks, averaging 1.43 PPG. When watching Peter his game is effortless, but dynamic as he runs the court extremely well and has the opposing team wondering where the ball will go next.

Cull and Sniuolis were both named to the Central West / West First All-Star team along with team mates Steve Pawelczyk and Matt Schnarr, giving Mohawk four of the seven selections.

Meanwhile, on the women’s side, two Mohawk players, Katie Johnston and Leah Waxman, were named to the Central West / West Second All-Star Team.
