Mohawk hosts Curling Championships this weekend
Mohawk College is the host for the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Curling Championships this weekend. Nine colleges will be represented in the event at the Glendale Golf and Curling Club, 401 Mount Albion Road, starting Friday March 2 at 8:00 am. The competition includes Men’s Women’s and Mixed sections and Mohawk has a team in each one.
Seneca is the defending champion in the men’s division. Mohawk coach Bill Urquhart knows the Sting will are favoured and he expects Niagara Knights to be tough as well. But outside of those teams, it’s hard to tell. Urquhart expects his men’s rink to be his best and has three returning players in skip Kris Blonski, third Steve Mitton and second Russ Gray.
Mohawk also has three returning players on the women’s team, in skip Shawn Marshall, third Aimee Smith and lead Haley Emmerson. The Mountaineers also picked up a strong second in Megan Cairns. Not only is the women’s rink experienced, it won the bronze medal last year in Welland.
The women’s division has been dominated by Confederation College of Thunder Bay. The Thunderhawks have captured seven of the last eight women’s gold medals.
Mohawk’s mixed team is inexperienced, although skip Russ Hunter is back and vice Marrissa Sherron should be strong. Unfortunately, last year there were not enough mixed teams entered in the OCAA Championships, so it was not an official event. In 2005, St. Clair won the mixed and will be trying to repeat as it’s the only section the Saints are entered in.
