Varsity Update - December 3, 2007
Women's Volleyball
The Mohawk women's volleyball team outlasted the Humber Hawks in a battle of the unbeaten in an edge of your seat OCAA match at the Fennell Gym November 27. The Mountaineers won the five set marathon 23-25, 26-24, 30-28, 26-28, 22-20. Mohawk had a triple match point at 14-11 in the deciding set, but Humber refused to give up and actually took the lead twice forcing the Mountaineers to rally at the end.Mohawk head coach Brian McEnhill said it took his players a while to warm up, but once they did, they were firing on all cylinders against their toughest league opponent. Leah Waxman led the winners with 15 kills and an ace.
Mohawk is now 6-0. Humber fell to 4-1.
Men's Volleyball
An impressive Mohawk men's volleyball team fashioned a 25-22, 25-20, 25-19 sweep of Humber when the two undefeated teams met in Hamilton November 27.Despite the straight sets win, Mohawk head coach James Bradley said Humber's a solid team. "I think that we might have intimidated them a little bit, because they made a number of errors which is not indicative (of the Hawks)." Jasmin Cull led Mohawk with 19 points, which included 15 kills, one stuff block and three aces. Cull now has 85 career aces, which is just one off the OCAA record. He is also nine off the single season mark of 38.
Mohawk improved to 5-0 while Humber went to 4-1.
Men's Basketball
Humber knocked off visiting Mohawk 82-71 in men's basketball November 27. Both teams had 10 three-pointers. Eight of Humber's treys came in the second half. Tyrone Berry had 14 points to lead the Mountaineers. Alen Beader and Marko Gacic each had 12.But head coach Brian Jonker said, "We didn't share the ball well enough offensively, to give ourselves a chance to win".
Humber is now 6-0. Mohawk is 5-4.
Women's Basketball
Host Humber exploded for 44 second half points to defeat Mohawk 78-52 in women's basketball November 27. The Mountaineers led early, but trailed 34-26 at the intermission.Mohawk head coach Kelly Dunham said, "They put alot of pressure on our guards and we let it get to us." Stacey Bourque was the top scorer for the Mountaineers with 13 points. Melissa Zwolak had 11 and Angela Brown eight.
Humber is now 2-3 after its second straight victory. Mohawk is 1-5.
