Jasmin Cull Presented OCAA Male Athlete Of The Year AwardHAMILTON, ON - "It is only fitting that one of the most gifted athletes ever to play here at Mohawk College has been recognized as the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Athlete of the Year," stated Mohawk College Athletic Director, Laurie Cahill of Jasmin Cull this afternoon at the presentation ceremony in Hamilton.
"His ability to train is a credit to himself, his coaches and his teammates. It is amazing how much preparation he has put in to take himself to the next level as an athlete," continued Cahill.
Jasmin's preparation and passion for the game was reiterated by Mohawk Volleyball's Assistant Coach and former teammate Matt Schnarr, who spoke of his growth as a player and as a person, and what he meant to his team's success which saw his Mountaineers team capture the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) National Championship bronze medal.
Unable to attend the ceremony was Head Coach, James Bradley, but the coach sent along his words of praise prior to the event.
"Jasmin's season really speaks for itself," said Bradley. "His individual stats are a measure of how dominating he has been all season long. His six points per game and almost two aces per game are a grade on his abilities. His playoff numbers are even more impressive, with 10 points per game in the final versus Algonquin College and without any errors. Then there are the records. Breaking the aces record in five matches! The mark of 38 being shattered, almost doubling it at 65! The numbers really do speak for themselves individually. As a member of the team he was vital in going undefeated in Ontario, including tournament and exhibition play. Winning gold, virtually uncontested and going on to win bronze at the CCAA National Championship…there is not much you can do better."
As for Cull and his thoughts on the recognition, he was not near as boastful stating, "It is a great achievement to know all of the hard work and training throughout the summer and the season has paid off. It is nice to be recognized with the award, but if I had it my way, I would make it the OCAA Athlete/Team of the Year award, because I could not have done any of it without them and they will always be a part of something I will never forget."
The ceremony was attended by the standout volleyball player, his family, teammates and numerous friends and he was presented with a commemorative poster of his play from the season, trophy, certificate and an honourarium sponsored by Volley Sport Plus (VSP).
