Fastball OCAA All-Millenium
Mountain resident and former Mohawk College pitching ace Alison Cassiano (Diplock) has been named to the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association All-Millennium team for women's fastball. She is one of 12 players selected, all of whom played prior to the change of the millennium.
Cassiano, elected to the Mountaineer Hall of Fame in 2001, was a league All-Star as well as her team's Most Valuable Player in her two years (1993 and 1994) with Mohawk and led her team to two bronze medals. Cassiano was the OCAA's top pitcher her first season with a 3.77 earned run average and followed that performance with 3.73 ERA the next year. She set the record for the most strikeouts in a game with 13 and was selected OCAA Athlete of the Week for that accomplishment. (Current Mohawk pitcher Jenny Koschanow set a new mark for strikeouts in a game with 16 in 2005.) At the 1994 championship Cassiano was voted as the Player of the Game in both of her starts. By being named to the All-Millennium team, Cassiano will also be inducted into the OCAA Hall of Fame at ceremonies in Windsor April 29, 2009.
OCAA All-Millennium teams were first announced in 2000, then recognizing teams for Volleyball and Basketball. This year the OCAA will recognize sixty-eight former athletes as members of the Women's Fastball, Men's and Women's Soccer and Men's and Women's Badminton All-Millennium teams. These athletes will also be formally recognized at the OCAA Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in Windsor on April 29th, 2009.
