Department of Athletics & Recreation Award

STACY DAFOE

This award is in recognition of Outstanding Participation in both the Varsity and Campus Recreation Programs. Stacy accumulated 29 points in the Campus Recreation Program. She played Co-ed 3-pitch, two semesters of Co-ed slo-pitch, dodgeball and also participated in Mountaineer Day. She was the captain of the varsity volleyball team, which had a 16 and 4 league record. She had 126 kills, 35 aces, 13 blocks for 174 points and averaged 2.81 points per game, placing her second on the team in scoring. She was also an All-Star Game participant at Fleming College in Peterborough.

Hap Holman Business Award

JAS MOGFORD

This honour recognizes outstanding participation in Varsity Athletics by a 2nd or 3rd year Business Student. The Award is named after Hap Holman, who coached Mohawk Curling for 27 years and was a Professor in Business Studies for 25 years. Jas is a quiet, but competitive badminton player, always one of the very first at practice working to improve his game. But in addition to his ability and hard work, our recipient has unselfishly allowed the Coaches to enter him in the category that is best for the team the last 2 years. In addition to a 4th place finish in OCAA mixed doubles play the past 2 years, our 2nd year Business Marketing Student, has consistently carried an average of 82 per cent.

Barb Moore Spirit of Athletics Award

ADAM BRENZIL

The Barb Moore Spirit of Athletics Award recognizes outstanding contribution to the enrichment of the entire Athletic program at Mohawk College. The recipient must demonstrate a positive attitude and the true spirit of student life in support of athletics as a non-varsity participant. Barbara Moore’s dedication, positive attitude and warm smile were constant in the 20 years she worked in the Student Life Department at Mohawk. Our winner, Adam, was at almost every Varsity home game, not to mention his Halloween visit to McMaster Sick Children’s Hospital, the Santa Claus parade and too many community and special SAC events to name here. He was a dependable and enthusiastic supporter of the Athletic Department and the SAC. You may not recognize him in person but he is the spirit and energy behind our mascot ‘Mo the Hawk.’

Dr. Keith McIntyre Athletic Leadership Award

JENNY KOSCHANOW

The Dr. Keith McIntyre Athletic Leadership Award, named after the former President of Mohawk College, is presented in recognition of outstanding leadership qualities, which contribute toward the enrichment, support, development and enhancement of Student Life at Mohawk. This year’s winner exemplified the leadership Dr. McIntyre valued in the Student Government experience. As a student leader Jenny grew in her position to lead her Committee through a challenging and demanding year both in Athletics and the Fall referendum process. She was steadfast in her commitment to all of her responsibilities as an athlete, a Committee member, and Chair of the SAC, always encouraging and supporting our students and Athletic Department, to be the best.

CCAA AWARDS

CCAA All Academics
The SIRC (Sport Information Resource Centre), in conjunction with the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association presents SIRC-CCAA Academic All-Canadian Awards. They are the CCAA’s most prestigious student-athlete award, epitomizing their mandate of recognizing excellence in academics and athletics. To achieve this honour, a student-athlete must be named to their province’s all star team (1st or 2nd), or have won a OCAA provincial gold or silver in a CCAA sport, and must have achieved honours at their institution. During the 2008-2009 season, four Mohawk student-athletes have achieved these accomplishments.

Kelsey Forbes
is a 2nd year Practical Nursing student and a member of the Women’s Soccer team. Kelsey received an OCAA 1st Team League All Star and this is the 2nd consecutive year receiving this honour.

Zalona Caruso, a 1st year Advertising student and also a member of the Women’s Soccer team, was named an OCAA 1st Team League All Star.

Sean Lowe is a member of the Men’s Volleyball team, named a OCAA 2nd Team League All Star & a member of the OCAA Bronze Medal winning team. Sean is a 2nd year Construction Engineering Technician student and this is the 2nd consecutive year winning this award.

Zac Schulz
is a 1st year Civil Engineering student and a member of the OCAA Bronze medal winning Volleyball team. Zac was selected as an OCAA 2nd Team League All Star.

OCAA Player of the Year

During the OCAA All Star selection, an OCAA Committee chooses only one athlete in each sport and names them the best Player in their sport in the OCAA this year. For the second year in a row, Mohawk has had an athlete chosen as the OCAA Men’s Volleyball Player of the Year. And the winner is Steve Pawelczyk.

CCAA All Canadian

Each year all OCAA Coaches in Varsity Sports which go to a National Championship select OCAA all stars at the end of the season. Only a select one or two of the top Ontario All Stars are selected and named All Canadian. Mohawk is proud to have one All Canadian athlete in their respective sport this year. Our All Canadian is Steve Pawelczyk from our Men’s Volleyball team
