Varsity Update - August 30, 2010
OCAA GolfMohawk College Mountaineers will shortly enter their second season back in varsity golf in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA). On September 12 at 1:00 pm the Mountaineers will hold tryouts for spots on this year’s team. The tryouts will be at King’s Forest.
All full time students are welcome to compete for the team. In particular, Mohawk is appealing to women golfers attending the college this fall, to join.
“We have experienced fantastic growth and opportunities in college golf the last 5 years, said Laurie Cahill, Manager of Athletics and Recreation at Mohawk. “We always seem to have interested men’s participants but last year only one woman came forward to join. We really want to encourage and invite all students, but in particular women, who have played tournament golf to come out. The danger is that if numbers continue low in women’s it may be discontinued, which is not what anyone wants to happen.”
There is not only an Ontario but Canadian College Championship held each Fall. More recently, a handful of OCAA Men’s and Women’s Champions have gone on to represent Canada internationally at the FISU games.
The OCAA Championship will be held at The Raven Golf Club at Lora Bay October 3–6.
Interested full time students can contact the Athletic Department at 905-575-2075 or Mr. Cahill directly at laurie.cahill@mohawkcollege.ca, to register.
Men’s Pre-Season Soccer
Sirwan Irandost notched the game winner as Mohawk went on to a 4-2 decision over Redeemer in pre-season OCAA men's soccer at Costco Field in Ancaster August 28. Irandost got to a loose ball inside the six yard box to score in the 66th minute. Ephraim Cirillo added an insurance marker for the Mountaineers, seven minutes from time.
The teams split four first half goals. The game was just a few minutes old when Taylor Prins put the host Royals ahead, but Davis MacLeod pounced on a rebound in the 25th minute to tie the score for the Mountaineers. Mohawk then pulled ahead by a goal on a close-in header by Matthew Kernick in the 34th minute. However four minutes later Everett Graham got Redeemer even again as he converted a rebound.
