Safety at Mohawk
An Important Message about Safety at Mohawk
Ensuring a safe and secure learning and work environment at all our campuses is an important, ongoing commitment at Mohawk College. The following safety and security procedures are in place at Mohawk campuses:- Continuous security monitoring of critical interior and exterior sites at the Fennell, IAHS, Brantford and STARRT campuses through the use of a surveillance camera network.
- Instant access to Security personnel through various emergency devices strategically located throughout college campuses. These include:
- Emergency links from internal office phones - dial "55" at Fennell, Brantford or STARRT Institute; "88" at IAHS
- Emergency buttons on internal Bell pay phones at all major campuses, with clear signage above the phones to identify locations for emergency response
- Well marked intercoms in the hallways of Fennell Campus
- Emergency telephones (clearly marked by blue lights) in the parking lots at Fennell and IAHS campuses. Pressing the panic button at these phone locations activates a strobe light and a 'hands-free' telephone which connects to campus Security.
- Panic alarms (identified by signs) in many women's washrooms
- Escort service to car or bus stop provided by Security.
- Regular drills and rehearsals to promote college-wide understanding of response protocols in situations requiring evacuation or lockdown.
- Mandated safety briefings on the first day of every class in every semester.
- Continued focus on occupational health and safety.
We recognize that there is no room for complacency when considering the safety of our students, staff and visitors to the College. Regular safety and security inspections are conducted at all campuses. In addition, our Emergency Response team and other college leaders are continually evaluating new technologies and prevention strategies.
Emergency situations can arise at any time, without warning. We are committed to minimizing harm to individuals and/or damage to college or personal property through well considered and appropriate responses. The College has developed a full suite of emergency response policies and procedures and a comprehensive Emergency Response Plan for effective action in the event of natural disasters, health crises, and other threats. We work hard to ensure that students and staff have convenient access to these documents and know what to do in any specific emergency. In addition, well established partnerships and working relationships with first responders and other community resources ensure access to experienced support teams, should an emergency occur.
